Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm: First impression and scope of delivery
When you open the packaging of the DT770 studio headphones, you immediately notice that this is a premium product. The scope of delivery includes a practical bag as dust protection and an adapter on the permanently installed spiral cable that adapts the 3.5 mm jack connection to a 6.3 mm connection. This allows you to work with small electronic devices as well as professional USB audio interfaces. However, the volume on small devices such as iPads or smartphones is very low due to the ohm version. More on this later!
When you put on the studio headphones, you can immediately feel the soft velour ear pads and the padding on the upper part of the headphones. The contact pressure is infinitely adjustable on the headband.
Why are these closed studio headphones so popular?
The DT770 Pro is certainly so popular because it simply delivers a sweet spot of balanced sound, high wearing comfort and a good price. Of course, around $150 is no bargain, but for headphones that really do last for decades and have been on the market since 2004, this investment is well worth it.
Originally intended purely as studio headphones (i.e. for recording and mixing), they can also be used perfectly as gaming headphones or podcast headphones. Or you can simply take them home after work and enjoy your favorite album.
The sound: balanced but powerful
This model is particularly suitable for monitoring and voice recordings, as the sound quality is very high and undistorted. The bass is not boosted, but is still powerful. Generally speaking, the sound is very neutral across the entire frequency range. This makes the sound incredibly natural and easy to assess, and such headphones are also suitable for mixing.
The frequency response also shows that these are linear headphones with a clear mid-range response and precise treble resolution that is not too sharp or fatiguing. This results in a realistic reproduction of the sound without unnecessary emphasis, which is a great advantage when assessing recordings and mixing. This tonal neutrality makes the DT 770 Pro a reliable tool in everyday studio work.

There is a very helpful video by In The Mix, who compared the two most popular closed variants. At Beyerdynamic, the number 7 stands for closed systems, the number 9 for open headphones. This means that the DT 990 Pro and the DT990 Pro X are the open versions.
What does the X stand for?
There is also a DT 770 Pro X. This has a new driver, the Stellar45 with 45 ohms and a detachable mini XLR cable on the ear cup itself. This eliminates even the only “weak point” in the long term – i.e. cable breakage. These are also available as a limited edition. According to Beyerdynamic, Stellar 45 enables even more neutral sound and more precise control of frequencies. It takes the classic DT 770 Pro studio headphones to the next level.
And the DT 700 Pro X?
This model has nothing to do with the 770 series and is a completely new model, not a further development of an existing headphone. It is even more neutral in sound and even more focused for studio work, i.e. mixing and mastering. Less recommended for consumer listeners. Another difference: the design. With a completely new design, the 700 Pro X looks more modern, but also weighs a little more.

There are different ohm versions of this model, and many people are confused by this. You can actually make a bad purchase if you buy the high-impedance version and only want to listen to music on your iPhone, so BEWARE:
The impedance indicates the electrical resistance and therefore has an influence on the sound. If the impedance is higher, the sound is perceived as more balanced, but you also need more power to operate the headphones (e.g. an audio interface).
Do you use audio interfaces or a professional studio atmosphere? Then choose the 250 Ohm version
Do you tend to use professional devices, but also a laptop or smartphone from time to time? Then choose the 80 Ohm version.
Do you only use small electronic devices such as smartphones or laptops? Then choose the 32 Ohm version.
The long-term test: How good do 10-year-old headphones look?
I personally bought my DT770 Pro privately in the fall of 2015 and used it for my audio engineering studio and also some jobs. I also used it in my spare time to listen to music and watch movies. The good news first: it still works perfectly and almost all parts are replaceable!
So you can order new ear cups, a new cushion for the headband and even the hard-soldered, single-sided cable * could be reattached yourself if the cable breaks (if you have the confidence). In addition to these spare parts, Beyerdynamic also offers a repair service.
After 10 years, it was time for me to replace the ear cups * and the headband *, as intensive use leaves its mark and the padding wears out. For around €35, you get the feeling of owning a new pair of headphones after 10 years!
Conclusion: The Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro is simply good.
If you are looking for a closed studio headphone that is robust and has a neutral frequency response, then the DT-770 Pro is the one for you. It’s not for nothing that this model already has legendary status. With a professional amplifier, we recommend the 250 Ohm version; for use with smartphones or laptops, we recommend the 80 Ohm version.
