Beyerdynamic DT 270 Pro review – An affordable alternative for content creation, home studios, and on the go

Beyerdynamic is known for high-resolution, mid-priced headphones made in Germany. The DT 270 Pro breaks both of these promises and therefore deserves the name “little brother of the DT770 Pro.”

TL;DR Our Rating:

Sound
★★★★★

For headphones in this price range, they really sound great: they sound unemotional in a positive way. Very balanced and perfect for speech.

Connectivity
★★★★★

Good for wired headphones. A USB-C adapter is included and the cable can be used on both sides of the headphones.

Workmanship
★★★★★

The workmanship is high quality and the headphones are robust. Not quite as robust as the larger models, but you can take them with you and use them without worrying.

Beyerdynamic DT 270 Pro: First impressions and what's included

Even the included accessories, which are actually quite unspectacular, make it clear that these headphones are designed for content creators and are in tune with the times. The USB-C adapter makes it easy to use them on the go with new iPhones and smartphones. This will continue to be a real plus in the future as more and more devices lose the 3.5 mm jack connection.

There is also the classic 3.5 mm to 6.3 mm adapter for use with audio interfaces and a handy fabric bag that makes transport even easier.

To be honest, if you’re used to other Beyerdynamic products, such as the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, the 270 feels “wrong” at first. It is smaller, seems less robust, and more like a poor “fake” of the 770. But that’s exactly what makes these headphones so special. They are still super comfortable, don’t press on your ears, and sound really balanced! The 270 Pro is circumaural, i.e., over-ear.

Sound and technical features

We have to get a little annoyed here, because headphones that are advertised as having a frequency range of 5Hz to 26kHz are not. Apart from the fact that humans can only hear 20Hz-20kHz on average, a frequency of 5Hz can be felt in the body and reproduced by large systems.

So we’re not praising it for having an “enormous frequency range.” Even if it did, you wouldn’t be able to hear it. In addition, the headphones don’t have any significant sub-bass components that you would hear in songs.

The sound profile makes it clear: this model is intended to be an affordable and compact studio and recording headphone for use in podcasts, home studio recordings, or content creation, for example. Speech is super clear, making it great for low-budget monitoring.

And how does it compare to the legendary DT770 Pro?

On the one hand, the comparison is quite easy, as the products have some similarities, yet they are very different.

While the 270 Pro is really a “young” model, it also appeals more to beginners, or people who are looking for headphones around the $100 mark. In this price range, it is also absolutely top notch! It sounds so linear that you can monitor and mix at a high level. For pure music lovers, these headphones are not really suitable, as they sound very neutral and unexciting. However, those who listen to music with them from time to time will still be able to enjoy it and train their ears at the same time. This model is only available with 45 ohms.

The 770 is designed more for studio situations. It is slightly heavier, larger, and more robust. If you really want to do mixing, monitoring, and recording at a professional level, this is the right choice for you. The high-impedance model variants also show that it was built for studio use.

Beyerdynamic has a very good explanatory article on the subject of ohms/impedance.

Conclusion: The DT270 is at the cutting edge.

All in all, the Beyerdynamic DT270 Pro made a very good impression in our test. It knows its target audience and serves them perfectly. Content creators, hobby musicians, videographers, home studios, smaller studios, and on the go. It’s basically a DT770 Pro light.

Above all, it is compact and you can take it with you wherever you go. Beyerdynamic gets another plus point for the fact that the ear cups, cable, and headband padding can be replaced.

We highly recommend it and enjoyed using the headphones ourselves.
