Rode Interview Pro test: First impression and scope of delivery

The Interview Pro comes in typical Røde packaging that is a little nicer but rather unemotional. When unpacking, it is noticeable that there are few “accessories”, and there is a reason for this: you only need a USB-C cable and a foam as a light pop and wind protection. A holder for the microphone, which can be attached to a tripod, is also included. The microphone case is practical and protects against dirt and water.

That’s it, and to be honest: That’s all you need! When you press the on and off button, the Interview Pro starts to flash and you can start recording by pressing the “Rec” button. It can be that easy!

Internal memory, 32-bit float recording and auto gain leveler

Thanks to the 32 GB internal memory, you can record up to 40 hours in 32-bit float. You don’t even need to think about batteries, because the built-in rechargeable battery, which can of course be recharged via USB-C cable, lasts up to 30 hours. The really practical thing about this microphone is that you can simply press “Record” and immediately have really good-sounding audio material! We didn’t need a manual, the handling of the Røde Interview Pro is super intuitive and easy.

The Auto Gain Leveler or Gain Assist is also a decisive factor for the automatically good sound. This is because the signal is directly at a good audio level with enough headroom to avoid clipping. However, clipping is extremely unlikely due to the dynamic range and the intervention of Gain Assist.

Compatibility and application possibilities

Not only can you use the microphone as a standalone recorder, but you also have compatibility with the entire wireless range from Røde (except the Wireless GO I, as this uses slightly outdated wireless technology), the Rødecaster PRO II and Rødecaster Duo, as well as the Streamer X. So you can also go live with the Interview PRO, whether as a streamer or in a more professional context with the Rødecaster PRO.

However, if you have a minimal setup, the Interview Pro and a camera will suffice. Just clap once to synchronize the audio in the edit and off you go!

Sound:

★★★★★
Relatively treble-heavy, but clear and always well leveled

Connectivity

★★★★★
Very good with many Røde products, internal memory easy to access

Workmanship

★★★★★
Really convincing for the price, functional design and no inferior plastic

Conclusion: Good handheld sound couldn't be simpler!

Unpack, switch on, record. Plug and play is a poor description of this microphone, because it lacks the plug, it’s just “play”. If you’re looking for an interview microphone, we think you’ve come to the right place. The compatibility with wireless microphones such as the Røde Wireless PRO is practical, but the Røde Interview PRO also performs without other devices using its internal memory. Switch the camera to record, switch the microphone to record, clap and you’re ready to go. This also really saved us a lot of time when filming the test. The price-performance ratio is also good, we are convinced!
