Shure MV6 USB-C microphone for gaming, streaming and more
After the hybrid MV7+, there is finally an affordable USB microphone from Shure. The Shure MV6* is marketed as a gaming microphone, but can’t it do more than “just” gaming?
Shure MV6: First impression and scope of delivery
Once we unpack the USB microphone, we wonder why the MV6 is seemingly only marketed towards gaming. With its USB-C cable, massive table stand and auto-level mode, it’s suitable for so much more.
But first things first: When you unpack it, you notice that everything is included and you’re ready to go straight away. There is a table stand with a comfortable height, a USB-C cable and, of course, the microphone itself. The foam cover already attenuates plosive sounds, but the digital popper stopper should make this even more pleasant later in the software. more on this later.
The microphone itself is made of metal, with the exception of the mute button. The 1 meter long USB cable is also sufficient for the applications.
Professional dynamic USB-C microphone
For the price of around €149, you shouldn’t normally expect a truly professional microphone, but the Shure MV6 comes very close. The design and directional characteristic alone make it a good product for all types of voice recordings. Once again, the legendary SM7-B was used as a model, which also offers the cardioid polar pattern and the design of the dynamic condenser microphone, but is also much more expensive. It also has an XLR connection and no USB-C connection, making it less beginner-friendly. Between the two models there is also the MV7, which we also tested: Shure MV7 review.
Shure Motiv Mix: For gamers, podcasters and streamers
The new Shure Motiv Mix software is free for all users and available for PC or Mac. What we really like is that everything is kept pretty simple here. This makes it very easy to make settings, even for beginners. It’s also ideal as a streaming microphone!
Another argument for using the Motiv Mix app with the MV6 is the real-time voice isolation, but unfortunately we’re not fans of this at all. This feature tends to cut out too much of the voice, making it sound inferior. It’s better to record with quiet background noises.
Nevertheless, we can recommend the software, both as a podcast mixer and as streaming software. This is because you can add and mix different audio sources and record all tracks individually. So you can either play your podcast intro and outro, or mix your gaming volume to your voice. So you have a small audio center in which you have an overview of all audio signals.
★★★★☆
The sound is good for a 149€ microphone, of course it doesn't sound as high quality as the SM7B. Nevertheless, it is absolutely usable.
★★★★★
Thanks to the USB-C connection and the Motiv Mix app, connectivity is very good, as are the setting options.
★★★★☆
The workmanship of the microphone is high quality and appears stable. The stand is also solid and does not wobble.
conclusion: More than just a gaming microphone
Even if the Shure MV6 USB gaming microphone is marketed as just that, you shouldn’t be fooled. The microphone can also be used as a podcast microphone. With the Auto Level Mode in particular, you can be sure that the level is not too loud or too quiet. This makes setup much easier.
