Troubleshooting
- File is not shown. Make sure it is a real AAC or M4A file and not just a renamed file with a changed extension. DRM-protected files from iTunes purchases or Apple Music cannot be converted.
- Multiple files are not added. You can select multiple AAC files at once or add them via drag and drop. If nothing happens, reload the page and try again.
- Conversion does not start. Check that JavaScript is enabled in your browser. If necessary, try the page in an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
- Progress bar is stuck. The conversion runs entirely locally in your browser. For larger files this can take some time. Wait until processing is complete.
- Reached 100% but no download available. Check whether your browser is blocking downloads. Disable any popup or download blockers if needed, then reload the page.
- Download All MP3 Files button does not appear. The button is only shown once at least two files have been successfully converted.
- File cannot be decoded. The AAC file may be DRM-protected or corrupted. Files from iTunes purchases or Apple Music subscriptions are DRM-protected and cannot be converted. Try a different source file.
- Conversion stops on mobile devices. The page must stay in the foreground until conversion is complete. Switching apps or locking the screen may pause the process.
- No download on iPhone or iPad. Long-press the download button and choose Save to Files. Downloads may be blocked in Private Browsing mode.
- MP3 sounds worse than the AAC original. AAC compresses more efficiently than MP3. Choose a higher bitrate for the conversion, such as 256 kbps or 320 kbps, to minimise quality loss.
- Browser responds slowly. Close other applications or browser tabs to free up memory.
- File is converted but does not appear in the list. Reload the page and add the file again. Make sure the file has fully loaded before clicking Convert.
Want to convert an AAC file to MP3?
With our online AAC to MP3 converter, you can quickly and securely convert AAC files to the widely used MP3 format. The entire process takes place directly in your browser. Your files never leave your device.
AAC files often come from Apple devices, iTunes, Apple Music, or other streaming services. MP3, on the other hand, offers maximum compatibility with nearly all devices, car stereos, and audio players.
Convert AAC to MP3 Online: Here's How
- Select your AAC or M4A file
- Choose your target MP3 bitrate, for example 192 kbps, 256 kbps or 320 kbps
- Start the conversion
- Download your MP3 file directly
Which MP3 bitrate should you choose?
128 kbps
Suitable for voice recordings and simple podcasts. For music from a quality AAC source we recommend at least 192 kbps.
192 kbps
A good balance between quality and file size. Works well when the AAC source file was encoded at 128 kbps.
256 kbps
High audio quality at a moderate file size. Recommended for music from higher quality AAC sources.
320 kbps
Maximum MP3 quality. Use this when the AAC source file is already high quality.
Note from practice: since AAC compresses more efficiently than MP3, always choose a higher target bitrate than the source to minimise quality loss.
AAC vs MP3 Compared
| Property | AAC | MP3 |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy, more efficient than MP3 | Lossy compression |
| Audio quality | Better than MP3 at the same bitrate | Depends on bitrate and encoder |
| Typical use | Apple devices, iTunes, streaming | Universal playback |
| Compatibility | High but not universal | Nearly universal |
| File extension | .aac or .m4a | .mp3 |
| Recommendation | When quality is the priority | When maximum compatibility is needed |
